A ready-made shower niche: a box of XPS foam board with a cement coating, set into the stud wall and tiled inside and out like the wall around it, so you get a flush recessed shelf without framing and sheeting one by hand. XPS is waterproof and light, and the coating gives tile adhesive a surface to grip. Waterproof it into the wall membrane as you would the rest of the shower.
Inside: 410mm wide x 410mm high, 70mm deep. Outside: 434 x 434 x 82mm, so cut the wall opening to 434 x 434mm. Board thickness 12mm.
