A ready-made shower niche: a box of XPS foam board with a cement coating, set into the stud wall and tiled inside and out like the wall around it, so you get a flush recessed shelf without framing and sheeting one by hand. XPS is waterproof and light, and the coating gives tile adhesive a surface to grip. Waterproof it into the wall membrane as you would the rest of the shower.
Inside: 400mm wide x 340mm high, 90mm deep. Outside: 420 x 360 x 100mm, so cut the wall opening to 420 x 360mm. Board thickness 10mm.
