A ready-made shower niche: a box of XPS foam board with a cement coating, set into the stud wall and tiled inside and out like the wall around it, so you get a flush recessed shelf without framing and sheeting one by hand. XPS is waterproof and light, and the coating gives tile adhesive a surface to grip. Waterproof it into the wall membrane as you would the rest of the shower.
Inside: 1220mm wide x 440mm high, 90mm deep. Outside: 1260 x 480 x 110mm, so cut the wall opening to 1260 x 480mm. Board thickness 20mm.
