Kitchen splashback tile ideas that actually work

Seven looks we see working again and again in Australian kitchens, with the exact tile styles to get each one.

1. Green kit kat, the current favourite

Sage or forest green tiles in a kit kat format are everywhere right now, and for good reason: the vertical lines add height, the colour works with timber and stone benchtops, and the texture softens flat pack cabinetry. See the kit kat range for the full palette.

2. White subway with dark grout

The most affordable transformation in the book. Classic white subway tiles with charcoal grout give definition and hide everyday marks better than white on white.

3. Splashback to the ceiling

Running the splashback tile all the way up behind open shelving or a rangehood makes a small kitchen feel taller and gives an ordinary tile a premium result. Works especially well with handmade look 100x100 squares.

4. Marble look, none of the maintenance

A single large sheet look using marble look porcelain reads as luxury but shrugs off red wine and lemon juice, two things real marble does not forgive.

5. Terracotta warmth

Terracotta look tiles bring Mediterranean warmth that pairs beautifully with white cabinets and brass hardware.

6. Fishscale feature

Fishscale tiles in a soft gloss make the splashback the artwork of the room. Keep benchtops and cabinetry simple and let the scales do the talking.

7. Colour drench with gloss squares

Pick one bold colour and commit: burgundy, cobalt or butter yellow in a gloss square. Browse by colour, from blues to pinks, to find yours.
